  1. The French boogie pianist – billed as ‘an energetic and efficient showman ‘ – began playing at the age of 11 and has completed 25 years and more than2500 concerts. A hint of his appeal comes in the disclaimer on his most recent album, Ben Toury Live: ‘Useful against bad mood and depression.’ Ben is a spectacular performer, blending high speed pianism with show-stopping business – a mix of Harry Connick’s crooning and Jerry Lee Lewis’s virtuoso piano playing plus! For much of his career he combined classical touches with Arabic melodies, but in recent years he is getting back to his roots with the Wild Boogie Woogie albums.

  2. The Traveling Janes have many different things to recommend them, not least the fact that a four-piece band contains members from Scotland, the United States, Singapore and Norway – plenty of travelling involved, though the name ‘Traveling Jane’ actually refers to a slang phrase given to a female performer from the late 19th/early 20th century vaudevillian traveling tent shows.

  3. Val Wiseman
One of the UK’s finest jazz singers, Val Wiseman, born in West Bromwich, began her career over 60 years ago with the West Side Jazzmen. That was a prelude to much greater things, initially with the Second City Jazzmen, then on to national fame with Monty Sunshine’s band. She also had the chance to sing with the likes of Humphrey Lyttelton, Kenny Baker and Alex Welsh.

  4. At the heart of Tipitina are powerhouse singer Debbie Jones with her roots in gospel and Justin Randall, quite simply the finest and most exciting New Orleans-style piano player outside of Louisiana. The great Irma Thomas said of Debbie, ‘She has a lot of soul in her voice.’ Together they deliver the red hot and rocking music of Dr John, James Booker, Professor Longhair and Fats Domino. Based in Lancashire, the band is a regular favourite at the Birmingham Jazz and Blues Festival, both the Upton Jazz and Blues Festivals, and represented the Royal Albert Hall at the West End Live Festival. The band has recorded two albums for Big Bear which have enjoyed extensive international airplay.

  5. One of the most popular features of the Birmingham Festival, You’re Never Alone with a Uke takes absolute beginners on the instrument and coaches them in learning one tune. Then comes the difficult part – getting a ukulele out of the hands of a five-year-old who has just discovered he can play it!

  6. The Swing Cats represent one of the most versatile and seductive vocal sounds that have appeared on the country's jazz scene, evoking the great jazz voices and composers of the 30s and 40s of the last century, such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and even Chet Baker.

  7. Billy Spakemon
Join Tim Martin and Billy Spakemon (Black Country Radio and Xtra) to celebrate Black Country Day with 'a bit of this and more of that music' and stories from across the years.

  8. Warren James is known as a talented banjo player, guitarist and singer of skiffle, jazz, country, rock’n’roll and blues music of the 1920s to the 1960s. In his skiffle group he revives the music that preceded the great pop boom of the late 1950s, with the songs of Lonnie Donegan and the many skifflers who followed in his wake.

  9. Tenement Jazz Band
This event is presented as part of a public programme of exhibitions and events exploring the heritage of The Exchange, University of Birmingham's city-centre location and former headquarters of Birmingham Municipal Bank.

  10. Art Themen
Over 60 years since he first made his mark with the Cambridge University Jazz Band, Art Themen is still picking up accolades. He received a lifetime achievement award from the Worshipful Company of musicians and was recently shortlisted for Jazz musician of the year in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards. His early career took him through a spell with Alexis Korner’s Blues Incorporated, work with contemporary British composers, a long association with Stan Tracey and associations with such American giants as Charlie Rouse, Nat Adderley and Red Rodney – all while working as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon.

  11. The Journeymen are a four-piece band, dedicated to playing the music of Eric Clapton. The Journeymen will take you on a journey through Eric’s extensive 60-year career, from his humble beginnings with The Yardbirds, into his stint with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, continuing with the first Super group, Cream, onto Blind Faith, then Derek and The Dominos and finishing with his solo career. Expect a performance that recaptures the feel and essence of an Eric Clapton concert.

  12. Regulars at the Birmingham Festival, Playing Django are Birmingham-based, with a 15 year residency at La Bastile in the City Centre and the Dark Horse in Moseley. They have now moved out from these, but their music, based on the Hot Club with Django Reinhardt, stays the same.

  13. Bruce Adams
Bruce Adams has been an irresistible force on the UK jazz scene for over 40 years, an exciting soloist who first came to public notice when a distinguished jury of Buddy Tate, Doc Cheatham and Max Jones voted him Best Trumpet and Outstanding Soloist at the 1982 Holsten Big Band Competition. In the mid-1980s Bruce worked regularly at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival with the likes of Sweets Edison. Warren Vache, Buddy Tate, Al Cohn, Benny Waters, Dave McKenna and a host of other stars from both sides of the Atlantic. In 1986 the Glasgow Jazz Festival recruited Bruce into the Benny Carter Big Band.

  14. Jamie Thyher
In 1994 guitarist Jamie Thyer decided to put together a rhythm section – the Worried Men – with the intention of rehearsing, but little expectation of breaking into the rock scene – too much originality, too much integrity! To their surprise enthusiastic audiences and promoters proved them wrong and 30 years later they have clocked up 4,000 gigs – from pub back room to festival stages. Their live album, Fear and Loathing at the Wunder Bar, opened the way to playing the likes of London’s Marquee and Nottingham’s Rock City alongside Chicken Shack, Wilko Johnson and Jefferson Starship, among many others. Still touring widely in the UK and Ireland, the band continues to excite audiences.
