About
The Swing Cats represent one of the most versatile and seductive vocal sounds that have appeared on the country's jazz scene, evoking the great jazz voices and composers of the 30s and 40s of the last century, such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and even Chet Baker.
Formed 10 years ago as a trio, the Swing Cats soon felt the need for a saxophonist and added Joan Subirats to guitarist Marc Masague and bassist Pere Loewe. When the original singer Saphie Wells left the group, Swing Cats were lucky enough to find an ideal replacement, a German-Indonesian singer who had moved to Barcelona and fallen in love with the city – Jacqueline Djohar.
After their first self-titled album (Saphie Wells & The Swing Cats, 2016), participating in many French and Spanish festivals and having played in renowned venues both nationally and internationally (Peru, Croatia, Russia, France... ), the Barcelona quartet now want to spread their message to the UK on their first visit.
And they have a new release, Used to Be Duke. The band has dedicated their second album to one of the greatest composers of the Swing era: Duke Ellington. Delving into the composer's beautiful harmonies and melodies along with the distinctive touch of The Swing Cats, Used to be Duke was born from the desire to honour the life and work of Duke Ellington.
