WINDRUSH

About

Journey of a Windrush Heroine  - An Interactive Storytelling Workshop Performance Written by Grace Bennett.

This play takes place in 1948, and is about a young lady called Precious who is living in Jamaica and is enticed by an advert to live and work in the UK. The advert speaks of people helping to rebuild England with various job opportunities and Precious decides to travel to the UK, via the HMT Empire Windrush ship, to seize the opportunity of the great life she and many others from the Caribbean believe they will have living in a Royal country like England.

Upon arrival as she exit the ship, she is baffled by all the wonderful media attention they all receive, but soon finds various difficulties encountered throughout her stay as she tries to makes a life for herself. From finding work, to a home, to even simple recreational activities, Precious constantly has to self motivate and encourage herself.

With the help of the audience (both children and adults) in this interactive play, she learns how to overcome the different hurdles of life that she constantly encounters, also how to live courageously while being a blessing to others.
We journey with Precious to see her outcomes, as she navigates life both during the turbulent Windrush years to a few years later, when she becomes more established within her community.

Our audience is actively a part of the whole entire journey. With themes like courage, resilience, unconditional love, kindness and hardship too,  prevalent throughout the play. Journey with precious on this educational, inspirational and entertaining journey.
